Well, we've played 4 games so far during this 2008-2009 season. We definitely have some talented young players this year. We still need a little more to come together as a team on the playing field.
The team is quite young this year with only 4 players returning from last year -- Holly Peacock, Chelsea Brower, Chelsea Albright, and Kara Smith. We've added 2 tenth graders -- Courtney Stelly and Carrie Barton. Courtney and Carrie have been solid additions to the squad who have added some needed maturity to the otherwise young, predominantly 9th grade team.
Our season started with Lincoln at home. Lincoln has always been a tough opponent for us and, last year, we were thrilled to tie them 2-2 on the road. This year, we did not fare so well and Lincoln won decisively, 4-0.
The second game took us on the road to Suwannee. While we lost 2-1, we started to show some of our potential as a team. Freshman Chelsea Sanders scored her first high school career goal.
Our third game found us at home again versus Leon High School. The Lady Lions have traditionally fielded strong squads and our JV team had not managed a win against them in the preceding three seasons. Freshman Chelsea Sanders and Goalkeeper Holly Peacock shared MVP honors for this game. Holly held the Leon team to one goal while freshman forward Chelsea added to her game statistics with two more goals. The Lady War Eagles JV squad won this game 2-1.
We hit the road again on Monday after the Thanksgiving break. It was a cold night and our JV players showed the effects of the time off. We were slow to settle into the rhythm of our passes and the Maclay Marauders showed off the footwork that has become a hallmark of a Warner-influenced soccer program.
Maclay scored the first goal of the night in the first 20 minutes. Freshman forward Chelsea Sanders tied the score with her 4th goal of the season soon after. Maclay scored the second and final goal before the close of the half. The game continued 2-1 with neither team scoring again for the final 40 minutes. Maclay won 2-1.
Freshmen defenders Terra Tyre, Breanna Williams, and Alexis Collins continue to show great promise in the back. Midfielders Alyssa Porter and Chelsea Brower combine speed and a never-give-up, leave it all on the field style of play to make a difference when either is on the field. Forwards Chelsea Sanders, Kara Smith, Ashleigh Crum, and Lauren Clarke only need more time to consistently find the back of the net.
The Lady War Eagles will meet Maclay again next Tuesday at home. I think we'll be ready...
