I'm sad that the season has ended for us...but I am so proud of how we played this season. I'm also happy that we have the soccer banquet to look forward to on March 7th!

We've Come a Long Way....
The timing of soccer season can be really difficult at times. We get started, we get into a groove, and then...winter break. Monday night we played our last game before the break. What a game it was! Last week's win against Maclay was hard fought...we battled for that win. We had worked really hard to overcome some team challenges...on and off the field. Our players were starting to figure out their places on the team and everyone was starting to get a sense of how we work together as a unit.
Monday night the hard work showed...and paid off. Florida High has always been a game that can go either way for Wakulla...and none of us were sure what to expect. Coach House had a few tricks up her sleeve and Dr. Pienta was willing to play along...so the Wakulla starting line up had a few surprises.
Coach House's ideas were pretty good. The season's top scoring player, Chelsea Sanders, began the game on the bench. Of course, she sounded ready to hack up a lung since she was fighting the crud that was ailing almost everyone since Thanksgiving. However, she soon got into the game and made her presence known.
When it came time to make start moving players around and making substitutions, Dr. Pienta stole a page from the House play book and the game really started to rock and roll. House had started one of our usual defenders, Terra Tyre, as a forward. Now, that might have seemed weird to a few people...but those people probably haven't seen Terra shoot goals during practice or warm ups. The girl has a foot! While Terra didn't find the back of the net during this game, the coaches think she will do it in future games.
While Terra didn't fulfill her goal-scoring potential on Monday, another usual defender certainly made up for it. Freshman Breanna Williams usually plays sweeper and she'd be the first to tell you that she feels like she owns that position. Pienta and Bre have been bantering back and forth all season about how Bre might score on a corner kick or even a long shot from the fifty. With a gleam in her eye and what Bre probably thought was a slightly evil laugh, Pienta told her star sweeper to move up to forward. And, Bre scored the first goal of the game.
Chelsea Sanders came off the bench to score the game's second goal. The Lady War Eagles JV squad ended the first half 2-0.
The half-time talk was heated. The JV players were hungry...hungry for more goals and a possible shut out. They had decided they really DO like playing to win...and after the Maclay win the previous week, they also were pretty sure they liked shut outs, too. The players picked over the action of the first half and discussed second half strategy. The decision was made to play as if they were two down. With a resounding countdown and a loud Eagles war cry...the JV players took the field for the second half.
The War Eagles really showed they had learned how to play together and work as a team during the second half. They communicated well on the field, passing the ball and just being where they were needed when they were needed. It worked. Forwards Kara Smith, Chelsea Sanders, and Ashleigh Crum kept their heads up and kept the ball moving. The midfielders helped keep pressure on the Florida High defense. The Wakulla defenders showed how much work they've been doing on moving the ball back up the line.
By the time the game was done, Chelsea Sanders had recorded her first hat trick -- three goals in one game--bringing her season total to eight goals. Breanna Williams had notched her first brace with two goals of her own. Goalkeeper Holly Peacock's wondrous yellow gloves continued to work their magic and the Wakulla High JV players won the game 5-0.
Now...to stay well-conditioned during the break and come back ready to play in a tournament January 10th! Stay tuned...

Maclay Redux
Last Monday, after the long Thanksgiving Break, we played a game on the road against Maclay. The team was definitely a little slow to get back into the game after all that turkey eating and football watching!
Maclay scored. We scored. Maclay scored again. Our girls started to come alive but it proved to be too little, too late. This game was especially disappointing after our exciting win against Leon before Thanksgiving.
Fast forward one week and a day to Tuesday December 9. Maclay made the trip south to the coast to play on our home field. The JV Lady War Eagles were ready to turn the tables on the Lady Marauders.
With a little pride and some victory chocolate at stake, the JV players vowed to make this game a shut out. For a while, it looked like a 0-0 game. Sophomore Goalkeeper Holly Peacock was really putting her snazzy new yellow gloves to good use.
The Lady War Eagles sent shot after shot toward the Maclay goal but nothing found the net...until the 72nd minute. Freshman forward Chelsea Sanders scored her 5th goal of the 2008-2009 season to win the game for Wakulla.

The Season So Far...
Well, we've played 4 games so far during this 2008-2009 season. We definitely have some talented young players this year. We still need a little more to come together as a team on the playing field.
The team is quite young this year with only 4 players returning from last year -- Holly Peacock, Chelsea Brower, Chelsea Albright, and Kara Smith. We've added 2 tenth graders -- Courtney Stelly and Carrie Barton. Courtney and Carrie have been solid additions to the squad who have added some needed maturity to the otherwise young, predominantly 9th grade team.
Our season started with Lincoln at home. Lincoln has always been a tough opponent for us and, last year, we were thrilled to tie them 2-2 on the road. This year, we did not fare so well and Lincoln won decisively, 4-0.
The second game took us on the road to Suwannee. While we lost 2-1, we started to show some of our potential as a team. Freshman Chelsea Sanders scored her first high school career goal.
Our third game found us at home again versus Leon High School. The Lady Lions have traditionally fielded strong squads and our JV team had not managed a win against them in the preceding three seasons. Freshman Chelsea Sanders and Goalkeeper Holly Peacock shared MVP honors for this game. Holly held the Leon team to one goal while freshman forward Chelsea added to her game statistics with two more goals. The Lady War Eagles JV squad won this game 2-1.
We hit the road again on Monday after the Thanksgiving break. It was a cold night and our JV players showed the effects of the time off. We were slow to settle into the rhythm of our passes and the Maclay Marauders showed off the footwork that has become a hallmark of a Warner-influenced soccer program.
Maclay scored the first goal of the night in the first 20 minutes. Freshman forward Chelsea Sanders tied the score with her 4th goal of the season soon after. Maclay scored the second and final goal before the close of the half. The game continued 2-1 with neither team scoring again for the final 40 minutes. Maclay won 2-1.
Freshmen defenders Terra Tyre, Breanna Williams, and Alexis Collins continue to show great promise in the back. Midfielders Alyssa Porter and Chelsea Brower combine speed and a never-give-up, leave it all on the field style of play to make a difference when either is on the field. Forwards Chelsea Sanders, Kara Smith, Ashleigh Crum, and Lauren Clarke only need more time to consistently find the back of the net.
The Lady War Eagles will meet Maclay again next Tuesday at home. I think we'll be ready...
